Warning:

Using DIY empathy tools to reduce your abilities (e.g., vision, hearing, mobility, or dexterity) can be dangerous. These tools should not be used in any situations that could cause harm. Please note that impairment simulation cannot convey what it is really like to live with capability loss on an everyday basis. In particular, the tools do not simulate other common effects such as pain, fatigue, sensory overload, emotional impacts, or the long-term adaptations people develop. Therefore, these simulation tools are intended to be used in combination with other methods as part of a holistic, inclusive design evaluation. For a deeper understanding, it is essential to engage directly with individuals who have lived experience.

Disclaimer:

DIY empathy tools, whether for visual, hearing, dexterity, or mobility impairments, are not substitutes for professional advice or comprehensive knowledge of disabilities. For example, visual impairment simulators cannot replace the insights of individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and hearing impairment simulators do not encompass the cognitive and emotional effects of hearing loss. If you have a medical condition or require specific accommodations, consult a qualified professional for guidance and support. Use these tools responsibly, acknowledging their limitations and potential risks. The School of Design, the Material Resource Centre, and the creators of these tools and manuals are not liable for any injuries, damages, or misuse of the tools.
